Day 9: Another Day, Another Dollar | Alex Carruthers

Heroes get remembered, but legends never die.  Every day, we try to be legends.  We try, and that’s all that matters.  We get out and grind.

Yesterday’s foolish 37 kilometer trek to Santo Domingo had us feeling some type of way the following morning.  It had us feeling very sore.  We said we would sleep in to 6:45, and I tried to, but there was a biker group that took about 45 minutes to get ready for their day’s trek. And they were not very quiet.  They woke up at 6:00 AM, so if you’re doing the math, by the time they left, it was already time to get ready for the day.

We got on the road around 7:30 today.  We were prepared to walk 22 kilometers from Santo Domingo to Belorado, and after the first 5 kilometers, we stopped in the first village and ate an incredible breakfast consisting of a ham and cheese toast thing, café con leche, orange juice, a package of this peporoni meat, a ham and cheese sandwich, and water.  It was just what we needed.

On our walk today, we talked to an American, and he asked us where we were from and so we told him that we were from Memphis, he said “Ah.  Memphis.  You wouldn’t happen to have gone to CBHS would you?” And to this we quickly responded, “Thank goodness no we did not.”  He laughed as we explained to him that CBHS is our rival school as we attended a far superior high school of gentleman and scholars.  One of his friends went to CBHS and that is how he knew of it.  Funny how small of a world it is.  Even in Spain.

We strolled into Belorado around 1:30, and so it has been nice being able to rest this whole afternoon as it is much needed.
The food in Spain is delicious.  In most of the towns we walk in, they have pilgrim meals which consist of a first course (kinda like a pasta or a paella), a second course (your meats like chicken or beef), a dessert, and a bottle of wine and bread (some of the more stingy restaurants give you a glass of wine).  This whole meal usually ranges from 10-12 euros.  It’s a pretty great deal.  Some may even call it a steal.

Hopefully we will be so well-rested that we will be ready to attack tomorrow.  At least that’s my hope.  I am about to go to La Farmacia to purchase some icy hot to put on my legs to hopefully relieve some soreness.

Vamos perros.
